Hyperscale and colocation data centres built in India are specified by US and UK design consultants, and the cable containment clause on those drawings reads NEC Article 392, NEMA VE 1 load class, UL-classified tray or, on European-led projects, IEC 61537 / BS EN 61537. Pioneer Industrial Instruments manufactures wire mesh, ladder and perforated cable trays in Pune that are supplied against both formats: UL certified, load tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory with the reports published, and delivered in phases matched to a hall-by-hall fit-out programme.
This page is for the EPC, MEP contractor or procurement engineer who has a data centre (data center, in the specification's spelling) containment schedule in hand and needs an Indian manufacturer who can meet the clause, document it, and deliver 10,000 metres on programme.
| Specification clause | What it means on site | How Pioneer meets it |
|---|---|---|
| NEMA VE 1 load / span class | Ladder on main power runs is classed by support span and working load (12B, 16B, 20C); wire mesh in data halls is specified by working load at 1.5–2.0 m support centres. | Perforated trays load tested to failure at an NABL-accredited laboratory (reports below); ladder and wire mesh supplied with declared load tables per span; span test on project requirement. |
| NEC 392 and UL classification as equipment grounding conductor | The tray may serve as the equipment grounding conductor only if its metal cross-section meets the NEC 392.60 minimum and joints are electrically continuous; UL classification confirms the cross-section and continuity. | UL certified; splice plates with four bolts per plate, bonding jumpers at every splice, expansion joint and fitting; cross-section data stated per size on the data sheet. |
| Materials by location | Aluminium or HDG ladder on main runs and in galleries; wire mesh overhead and under raised floor in data halls; perforated tray in MEP galleries; stainless in chiller yards and coastal sites. | Aluminium and HDG ladder 100 / 150 mm rails; wire mesh 4–6 mm in electro-zinc, HDG, SS 304L / 316L; perforated in pre-galvanised, HDG, powder coated, stainless. |
| Segregation of power and data | Separate trays or divided trays for LV power, UPS output, fibre and copper, with specified separation distances between power and signal routes. | Divided trays, tray dividers and parallel stacked supports supplied as a system; colour-coded powder coat for service identification where specified. |
| Fire and smoke | Metal tray is non-flame-propagating; firestopping at wall and floor penetrations is the installer's scope; some owners require solid covers on specific routes. | Declared non-flame-propagating under IEC 61537; solid and ventilated covers in matching finish. |
| Seismic restraint | Supports and trapeze hangers braced per IS 1893 or ASCE 7 as the owner's standard requires; bracing design is the project engineer's scope. | Support channels, trapeze kits, cantilever arms and hold-down clamps compatible with bracing; support loads provided for the engineer's calculation. |
| Submittals and inspection | Vendor approval before procurement; material test certificates per lot; third-party or owner inspection before dispatch. | NABL laboratory reports, Certificate of Compliance, EN 10204 3.1 certificates, coating readings, dimensional reports, inspection and test plan; plant open to inspectors. |
| Area | Tray type | Typical sizes | Material and finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data halls — overhead and under raised floor | Wire mesh (basket) tray | 100–600 mm wide, 50–100 mm deep; 3 m lengths; fast couplers, drop-outs, waterfall exits | Electro-zinc indoors; HDG where humidity is uncontrolled; SS 304L where washdown applies |
| Main LV and UPS power runs, galleries | Ladder tray | 300–1000 mm wide, 100 or 150 mm side rails, rungs at 250 / 300 mm | Aluminium (US-format specs) or hot-dip galvanised steel after fabrication (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461) |
| MEP galleries, plant rooms, substations | Perforated tray with covers | 100–600 mm wide, 50–100 mm flange, 2.0 mm | Hot-dip galvanised; powder coated for colour-coded services |
| Chiller yards, generator yards, rooftops, coastal sites | Ladder or perforated, covered | As above | SS 316L or HDG with 80–95 µm coating; FRP where there is chemical exposure |
| Telecom and meet-me rooms | Wire mesh and raceway | 50–300 mm wide | Electro-zinc, powder coated |
Perforated trays from 50 to 300 mm wide were load tested to failure on a 2.35 m span at Chakan Testing and Research Lab, Pune (ISO/IEC 17025:2017, NABL TC-8638) in October 2024, with central deflection recorded at every step; the same samples were tested for zinc coating thickness and uniformity, adhesion, salt spray, tensile strength, chemistry and bend. Every tested section exceeds NEMA VE 1 class 8C working load with the 1.5 safety factor and stays within the IEC 61537 deflection limit. The full reports are published: download the laboratory reports (PDF, 19 pages); the data is tabulated on the NEMA VE 1 page and the IEC 61537 page.
Ladder and wire mesh families carry declared load tables and are span tested at the laboratory where a project calls for a family-specific certificate. UL documentation is provided with the submittal pack.

Indian codes do not mandate it; the requirement comes from the project specification. Hyperscale and US-designed colocation projects write their global specification into the Indian build, and that specification typically calls NEC Article 392, NEMA VE 1 load classes and UL classification of the tray as an equipment grounding conductor. Where the owner's specification is European or Indian, IEC 61537 with NABL laboratory evidence is what the consultant checks instead. Pioneer supplies against both formats and provides the UL and laboratory documentation at submittal stage so the EPC's vendor-approval file is complete before procurement.
Data-hall wire mesh is usually supported at 1.5 to 2.0 m centres from the ceiling grid or hot-aisle containment, so the specification states a working load per metre at that spacing rather than one of the 8 to 20 ft ladder classes. Pioneer declares a load table per width and support spacing for its 4 to 6 mm wire mesh range and marks the declared value on the data sheet; for a specific class certificate on a particular size, a span test at the NABL laboratory is arranged against the project programme.
Aluminium is lighter, non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant without a coating, which is why US specifications favour it for long main runs and busway-adjacent routes; hot-dip galvanised steel is stronger per rupee, stocks faster in India and is the usual choice in Indian-designed facilities. Pioneer manufactures both in 100 and 150 mm side-rail depths, and the choice is normally fixed by the owner's standard rather than by cost; where the specification allows either, we quote both.
Yes. Send the schedule or the part numbers from the incumbent catalogue and we return a like-for-like equivalence table covering width, depth, material, finish, rung spacing and the declared load at the drawing's support spacing, so the consultant can approve the substitution on technical grounds. Fittings, splice plates, hold-down clamps and bonding jumpers are supplied to match.
Standard wire mesh, perforated and ladder sizes run on a daily capacity of up to 8,000 m, so a phased delivery matched to the hall-by-hall fit-out sequence is the normal arrangement: first consignment within two to three weeks of drawing approval, then weekly or fortnightly releases against the site programme. Stainless and aluminium items follow the same sequence with material lead time added.
Per lot: material test certificates in EN 10204 3.1 format, hot-dip galvanising coating thickness readings, dimensional inspection reports and the packing list. Per project: the NABL laboratory test reports, Pioneer's Certificate of Compliance to NEMA VE 1 and declaration to IEC 61537:2023, data sheets with load tables, and the UL documentation. Plant access for the EPC's or owner's third-party inspector is available with an inspection and test plan shared in advance.
Send the containment schedule or the specification section and we will return the equivalence table, the compliance statement by clause, the test reports and a quotation with a delivery programme.
