Drip trays that keep water off what matters

Drip trays and drain pans for data-centre pipework, AHUs, FCUs and VRF indoor units — made to the size of your unit or pipe run, in SS 304, hot-dip galvanised, GI, coated GI or aluminium, in lengths up to 5000 mm, at our plant in Pirangut, Pune.

  • 0.8–2.0 mm sheet
  • Lengths up to 5000 mm
  • 30–100 mm edge
  • Drain socket at the low point
  • Couplers for continuous runs
  • Datasheet and GA drawing for approval

Two kinds of drip tray

A drip tray is a shallow pan with a turned-up edge and a drain. It sits under anything that can sweat, drip or leak, and carries the water to a drain before it reaches a ceiling, a panel or a server rack.

Pipe-run trays

Long, narrow trays that run under chilled-water, condensate and liquid-cooling pipework — in data halls, hot and cold aisles, plant rooms and risers.

  • 100 to 750 mm wide
  • Lengths up to 5000 mm, or cut to your run
  • Joined with plate couplers into one continuous tray
  • Priced per running metre

Equipment pans

Pans made to the footprint of the unit above — AHUs, FCUs, VRF ductable, cassette and hi-wall units, and data-centre cooling equipment.

  • Made larger than the unit so nothing misses the pan
  • Sizes such as 750×750, 1200×750, 1460×1070 or 2800×800 mm
  • Insulated versions for chilled-water units
  • Priced per piece or per m², to match your BOQ

How a Pioneer drip tray is built

The tray hangs on threaded rods from cleats on each side, falls to a drain socket at its lowest point, and is made wider than the unit it protects.

Section drawing: drip tray on 8 mm rods under an indoor unit, 30 to 100 mm edge, base falling about 1 in 50 to a 15 mm drain socket, optional insulation underneath

Choosing the material

MaterialChoose it when
SS 304The tray must stay clean and rust-free for the life of the building — data halls, pharma, food, and anywhere a leak would be costly.
Hot-dip galvanisedThe specification asks for a heavy zinc coat and rules out electroplated GI. Hot-dip galvanising lays down a much thicker zinc layer than electro-galvanising.
Pre-galvanised GIHVAC units inside buildings. Specify the zinc: 120, 180 or 275 GSM. 275 GSM is the same coating US specifications call G90.
Powder-coated, epoxy-coated GI or PPGIYou want a painted barrier over the zinc, or a colour that matches the services.
Epoxy-coated aluminiumLarge pans where weight on the slab or the hangers matters.

Getting the size and slope right

A drain pan only works if water always has somewhere to go. ASHRAE Standard 62.1 asks that a drain pan:

  • slopes at least 10 mm per metre (⅛ inch per foot) toward the outlet, or otherwise drains freely with the fan on or off;
  • has its outlet at the lowest point, large enough not to overflow;
  • has a P-trap or other seal where the pan sits under negative pressure;
  • catches the full width of whatever drips, and stays reachable for cleaning.

The approved shop drawings our trays are made to use a fall of about 1 in 50 — 20 mm per metre, twice the ASHRAE minimum — and a tray roughly 150 to 300 mm larger than the unit overall. A 900 × 450 mm indoor unit, for example, gets a 1200 × 750 mm tray.

Under chilled-water units the pan itself gets cold and can sweat. That is why we offer trays with 13 mm nitrile or 19 mm insulation underneath.

Drip trays in data centres

Liquid cooling has brought water back into the white space. Data-centre specifications now call for drip trays under secondary-fluid and chilled-water pipework in the data hall, under pipe manifolds and flushing lines, and in both hot and cold aisles.

  • Tray sections joined into one continuous tray, so water flows to the drains without being stopped at a joint.
  • Hot-dip galvanised or SS 304 sheet, often with the edge turned up 63 mm (2½ in) or 100 mm (4 in).
  • Room in the tray for the leak-detection probes or sensing cable your BMS contractor fits.

We make the trays to the pipe routes on your layout, and the wire mesh and ladder trays for the same hall. See cable trays for data centres.

Drip tray questions

Straight answers from our engineers. Ask us anything else on WhatsApp or by mail.

Which material should I choose for a drip tray?

SS 304 for data halls, pharma, food and anywhere the tray must stay clean and corrosion-free. Hot-dip galvanised steel where the specification excludes electroplated GI and asks for a heavy zinc coat. Pre-galvanised GI (120, 180 or 275 GSM), powder-coated, epoxy-coated GI or PPGI for HVAC units in buildings. Epoxy-coated aluminium where weight matters. Send us your BOQ line and we match it.

What edge height does a drip tray need?

Most HVAC unit pans use 50 or 75 mm. Data-centre pipework trays are often specified at 63 mm (2.5 in) or 100 mm (4 in). Shallow 30 mm trays are used under small drain pipes. We make 30, 50, 63, 75 and 100 mm as standard and other heights to drawing.

How much slope should a drain pan have?

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 asks for a drain pan that slopes at least 10 mm per metre (1/8 inch per foot) toward an outlet at its lowest point. Approved shop drawings where Pioneer is the make use a fall of about 1 in 50, which is 20 mm per metre.

How big should the drip tray be compared with the unit?

The tray must catch everything the unit drips, so it is made larger than the unit footprint. On approved shop drawings the tray is typically 150 to 300 mm larger overall, for example a 1200 x 750 mm tray under a 900 x 450 mm unit.

How are drip trays joined into a continuous run under pipework?

Tray lengths are joined with plate couplers (25 x 200 x 2 mm) and M8 fasteners so the run behaves as one continuous tray that drains to its outlets. Fasteners are SS 304 for stainless trays.

Do you supply insulated drip trays?

Yes. For chilled-water units we supply trays with 13 mm nitrile rubber or 19 mm insulation underneath, so the tray itself does not sweat.

Do you send a datasheet and drawing for approval?

Yes. Every drip tray order starts with our datasheet and a GA drawing for your consultant's approval, and test certificates go with the supply.

Do you price per piece, per metre or per square metre?

All three, to match your BOQ: per piece for equipment pans, per running metre for pipe-run trays, and per square metre where the BOQ measures that way.

Send your BOQ.We will price it.
