Perforated vs Ladder vs Wire Mesh Cable Trays: Which to Specify?

Specify perforated cable tray for general power and control cabling, ladder tray for heavy power cables over long spans, and wire mesh tray for light data, fibre and instrumentation cabling. Pioneer Industrial Instruments of Pirangut, Pune manufactures all three — in pre-galvanised GI, hot-dip galvanised, powder coated, SS 304 / 316L and aluminium — and supplies FRP trays for corrosive zones.

Pioneer perforated cable tray

Most BOQs say “cable tray” and a width. The tray type and the material decide whether that run carries its cables for decades or sags and rusts within a few years. Here is how we help consultants choose, with two tables you can use as a checklist.

Load and spanLight to heavy, set by sheet thickness and height; moderate spansHighest; built for long spansLight; shorter spans, typically 1.5–2.0 m support spacing

Where cables need full enclosure — dusty areas, exposed runs, sensitive circuits — use box type trunking with a removable cover instead.

How to choose in four questions

  1. What cables? Large single-core and armoured power cables go on ladder. Mixed power and control go on perforated. Fibre, copper data and instrument cables go in wire mesh.
  2. What span? The structure usually fixes the support spacing. Choose the tray, height and thickness that carry your cable load at that span — ask for the safe working load at that span, not just a width.
  3. What environment? Use the material table above. Fittings, covers and couplers must be in the same finish as the tray.
  4. What standard? IEC 61537:2023 or BS EN 61537 on international and UK-led specifications, NEMA VE 1 and UL on US-format projects. All three tray types are tested under the same standards.

Each of our product pages carries copy-ready BOQ clauses: perforated, ladder and wire mesh.

Why Pioneer

Because Pioneer makes all three tray types and every common finish in one plant, we have no reason to push one over another — we recommend what suits your cables and site.

  • UL certified cable trays, declared to IEC 61537:2023 and load tested for NEMA VE 1.
  • Tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory — load–deflection, zinc coating, salt spray, tensile and chemical reports are published as a PDF.
  • Manufacturing since 1994 at our own plant in Pirangut, Pune, which turns out up to 8,000 metres of tray a day.
  • Supply across India by road from Pune, and export FOB Nhava Sheva (JNPT, Mumbai).
  • Quotation within 24 hours of your BOQ, with the data sheet your consultant needs.

What is the difference between perforated, ladder and wire mesh cable trays?

A perforated tray is formed sheet with a slotted base that supports cables continuously. A ladder tray has two side rails joined by rungs and carries heavy cables over long spans. A wire mesh tray is a welded wire grid for light data, fibre and instrument cabling. Pioneer Industrial Instruments, Pune, manufactures all three.

Which cable tray is best for heavy power cables?

Ladder cable tray. Its side rails carry heavy loads over long spans, cables are fully ventilated between the rungs, and large, stiff cables can be laid and clamped on the rungs.

Should control cables go on perforated or ladder tray?

Usually perforated. Small and flexible control cables sag between ladder rungs; a perforated base supports them continuously while the slots keep them ventilated.

Which cable tray is used in data centres?

Typically wire mesh above the racks for fibre and copper, ladder for the power, and drip trays under every chilled-water line that crosses the white space. US-specification data centres also ask for NEMA VE 1 and UL certified trays.

Which cable tray material is best for outdoor use?

Hot-dip galvanised steel for most outdoor and industrial sites; SS 316L on coastal and chloride-exposed sites; FRP for strong acid or alkali zones; aluminium where weight matters. Pre-galvanised GI is for dry indoor areas.

Do the same standards apply to all three tray types?

Yes. IEC 61537 and NEMA VE 1 cover cable tray and cable ladder systems, including wire mesh. Whatever the type, ask for the safe working load at your support span and the deflection at that load.

Who manufactures perforated, ladder and wire mesh cable trays in India?

Pioneer Industrial Instruments (Pioneer Cable Trays), Pirangut, Pune, has manufactured perforated, ladder and wire mesh cable trays and fittings since 1994. The trays are UL certified, declared to IEC 61537:2023 and NEMA VE 1, and supplied across India and for export FOB Nhava Sheva.
